BMW G-Series driveshaft overheating failure

BMW G-Series driveshaft overheating failure

MMX driveshaft heat shields for all G-Series M Cars. Prevention is better than a cure.

You’re a G-Series M Car owner and you track your car so, no doubt, you already know about the well-documented issue of the factory driveshaft CV boots/gaiters splitting due to excessive exhaust heat exposure? Well we have a solution and, unlike BMW’s expensive recommended remedy, our all-new precision-made aluminium heat shields are available NOW, they’re hugely effective AND they’re a damn site less expensive than BMW’s solution. Let’s talk about it…

What causes the issue?

So, this applies to the G Series M2, M3 and M4 models and the primary reason this happens is because the rear driveshafts run very close to the rear portion of your exhaust system. Therefore the extra radiant heat that's generated from the exhaust when you’re pushing your car hard can result in premature failure and cracking of the driveshaft CV boots as they perish. This happens with the stock exhaust system so if you’ve already fitted (or are looking to fit) a larger aftermarket exhaust system too, then you really need to listen up. As they say - prevention is always better than cure.

What do BMW say...

BMW are aware of this ‘issue’ and their official statement is: "Extreme race track operation leads in case of the G80, G81, G82, G83 & G87 and the associated Competition models to high temperatures at the gaiters of the rear output shafts on the final drive unit side. In the event of gaiter damage that indicates this cause of damage, alternatively also the more temperature-resistant rear output shafts of the special models G80CS, G82CS & G82CSL can be installed in the workshops."

Sure, installing CS/CSL is a remedy as BMW suggests, but there are two considerations with that advice. Firstly, you’ll be coughing up over £2K for replacement shafts and secondly there’s a huge lead time if you were to go that route.

Installation

To make sure there was a super-effective alternative we took matters into our own hands here at MMX and devised a complete solution that’s not only cost effective, but easy to install in just 15-30 minutes. What's even better is that they’re fully reversible - meaning that you can remove them at any point should you wish to. They can be installed at home with a jack and simple tools or, if you want one of our MMX dealers to handle the installation for you, then that’s always an option. Bear in mind also that a larger diameter aftermarket exhaust system can also mean the gap between the exhaust and driveshafts is further reduced. There is also the consideration that aftermarket exhausts can produce more heat both on the road and track, when driven hard.

MMX precision engineering

These precision engineered driveshaft heat shields are made from strong, lightweight, durable T6-6062 aluminium with a polished and anodised black finish for optimal heat dissipation. They also come supplied with all of the necessary hardware for a simple, hassle-free installation. The sculptured design offers optimum aesthetics and functionality to shield your BMW’s CV boots from excessive heat exposure, in turn preventing premature wear.

This also has a greater positive effect too - protecting the overall drivetrain of your car! If a split CV boot was to go unnoticed it COULD lead to more serious drivetrain issues, so why take the risk in the first place?

When you’re tracking your car there are always extra considerations to make and this is just one preventative measure you can take to prolong the life of your car’s parts AND prolong your enjoyment of the car itself. We also offer a host of other precision-made upgrades for the G-Series M Car models, which you can find out more about right HERE.
